Mike “Fish” Jeanmaire
It is with great sadness that I must report the death of Mike “Fish” Jeanmaire. Fish passed away peacefully at home last Tuesday after a long illness. He was well known to many MUSS members in the late 70’s & early 80’s for the wild parties he & Liz used to throw at their home in Peak Forest.
Never one to miss a party, he & Liz attended the MUSS 50th celebrations, despite his breathing problems the the difficulties in organising a continuous supply of 100 per cent oxygen
On Liz’s retirement they moved to Somerset, where they continued to socialise with the cave diving group.
He will be very sorely missed by all who knew him.
The funeral will be held at the Top Chapel of Haycombe Cemetery & Crematorium, Bath, BA2 2RQ at 13:30 on Friday 19th November. The commital will be at 14:30 at the crematorium then back at the Hunters on Mendip for 16:00.

Matienzo 40th / 50th celibration event
Hi,
The reason for this note is to promote the Matienzo 40th / 50th calibration event being held in the UK.
This will be an all day event on Saturday 12th June at Dalesbridge in Austwick
It is intended to have presentations during the day time along with displays & stalls.
In the evening we have live entertainment as well as quiet areas. Food will be available on a pay as you buy basis during the day. An evening meal will be by advanced ticket. It is intended to have the bar open throughout!
The event will be all ticket:
Daytime events - £7.00
Evening stomp - £7.00
Evening food - £7.00
All three items - £20.00
I hope the event will be a full day with plenty of interest to Matienzo regulars, those who have not been recently, cavers who have only heard of it and interested locals.
To make the event a success will require help from many people. I will contact those who we hope will be able to give presentations or undertake other tasks. Please forward any ideas you have which could enhance the event - preferably with an offer of help. I am particularly keen to provide interest to everyone during the day. This includes any children who may come along with parents. Therefore if anyone can do face painting or other entertainment please let me know.
I hope you will all pass details of the event to anyone who may be interested but in receipt of this note.
Regards,
Andy

Jim
I scribing this note to pass on sad news. I have just had a 'phone call from Max Dobbie to let me know that Jim Eyre passed away (sure Jim would have used the phase - snuffed it!) yesterday. I will let you know details of arrangements as & when I receive any. I spoke to Wendy Williams last night & she told me a little about J Rat's funeral & what is happening at conference w.r.t. Tony. Now we have Jim to think of as well. Typical of that pair - Buy One Get One Free!

Pre-Dinner Show Cave
A token gesture of a pre-dinner caving trip - Ingleborough show cave. Meet in Bernies at 10 along with the "hard cavers" (and Grovel). Back in time for Liz and Lank's walk if keen enough for two activities in one day. Alternatively back in time for an afternoon of pre-dinner socialising down the pub.

Pre-Dinner Shorter Walk
The Mills family and the Ruggs are going to do a shorter walk, starting a bit later than Phil's walk. We're meeting at Stainforth car park at 2.00pm and plan to walk along the river and back round the village. Everyone welcome.
So, ideal for anyone wanting a later start and/or a short walk on the flat. We may of course bump into Phil's crowd en route which would be nice.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at some point on Saturday.

Pre-Dinner Caving cont.
Grovel says,
> We intend going caving, or at least going through the
> motions, that is:-
> Getting to Bernie's at around 10 to 10:30.
> Eating breakfast.
> Reading the papers...
???
Sigh! What happened to my proposed plan to get to the Dales early (possibly
even the night before) and doing a PROPER trip Manchester Bypass / Mancunion
way? Plenty of room for all there :-)
OK, OK, I guess some might struggle with all that crawling nowdays. So I
guess I'll meet you in Bernies as suggested for an early afternoon start.
Possible options:
Something jolly in Kingsdale (Swinsto pull through, Heron Pot).
Easegill classic through trip (Lancaster - County via Manchester Bypass
perhaps - I could rig County during the week for you)
Interesting tours of Easegill (County Pot, Trident, Wretched Rabbit, New
Spiral Stairs route)
Link Pot (guided tour of interesting corners, I might even leave the
surveying kit at home!)
The sooner you're up and breakfasted the sooner you can get the squalid
caving over and the sooner you'll be back to start the heavy drinking
session before the meal.
Anyone in the Dales on Friday night is welcome to come drinking in Settle
and stop at our house to get a flying start on Saturday morning.
Sam.

Bad news
We intend going caving, or at least going through the motions, that is:-
Getting to Bernie’s at around 10 to 10:30.
Eating breakfast.
Reading the papers.
Looking at the nice new shiny equipment in Inglesport’s window.
Checking whether there is a football match on the telly.
Then someone will spoil it all by asking “When are we going caving?”
Current plans are . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . get to the Golden Lion
If anyone has any burning desires tell us.
Options considered have been:
One of MUSS’s great finds – we coundn’t think of any that fit this bill.
Big Meanie – vetoed
Snools / Snorkel Hole – it has rained within the last year.
Anyway, with the numbers wanting to go caving we would not all simultaneously fit into most of our finds!
Yours, ever caving (occasionally)

Pre-Dinner Walk
For those nimble enough to walk can I propose a route? Starting at Saturday lunch time the same as JC's bike ride; let's say 12.30 to 1.00pm at the market place cross in Settle, opposite the Naked Man, for the walkers.
This is a social walk leaving puff to talk. It is a tweak over 7 miles, so probably about 3 to 3 and a half hours. I am suggesting starting by going up and along the Ribble past Stainforth Force, through Stainforth, which gives anyone who wants it a drop out point of the Craven Heifer pub and then back the way we came along the river. For those who want to do the round, we continue up the old lane to Catrigg Force, which is the only real climb on the walk and even that is not too bad. Then skirting Winskill on down the delightful valley route to pretty, pretty Langcliffe village, and back to Settle along the track that runs below Blua Crags.
All welcome!

Pre-Dinner Biking with JC
Dear MUSSers,
As I am too fat to cave & the knees won't stand walks, I intend to do an off-road bicycle route starting / finishing at Settle on Saturday before the Dinner.
Perhaps a 3 hours outing starting lunch time.
All welcome (well not everyone, obviously)!

MUSS 50th
The MUSS 50th dinner is now full - but if you haven't yet booked don't despair. Come to the Golden Lion for beers and to the alternative meal round the corner at the curry house. As Sam says...
"BUGGER! Anyone else who's not booked yet is welcome to join Ro & I for the LATE MEMBERS 50th DINNER round the corner at the Ruchee curry shop. We can still meet at the Pub of the unknown MUSS member (Golden Lion) for drinks before and after.
Tony, can you forward any enquiries to me? it would be a shame for people to miss the entire event just cos there's no spaces left for food at the pub.
Anyone interested please contact Ro or I.

Good excuse for not caving
National Winter Ales Festival 16th - 19th January
Grovel has already got his excuse lined up as he will be working at this festival from 12th January through to 19th. Thus he has successful avoided going caving on two consecutive weekends!
He will, however, need some help to drink the beer as there will be a large quantity on offer. If he gets through only half those available he will be taking the rest of January and most of February off recovering from liver failure in Manchester Royal Infirmary!
Anyone interested it is at the New Century Hall, Manchester. See http://www.winterales.uku.co.uk/ for many more details.
